UK General Election: An Entrepreneur Reacts

A new Prime Minister has been elected to lead the UK.

We've seen more votes and electoral shenanigans than I’ve had birthdays in recent years - I like to skip a few birthdays as I get older; try it, it’s fun. I always watch elections with fascination, not just for the results. The real reason? Mainly to see people’s behaviour...

If you could be bothered to read my letter last week - or, as I prefer to call it, “drivel” - you’ll remember I pondered the power of understanding human psychology

While I certainly have my own opinions on politics, I rarely share them. I believe I’m the PM of my life. You see, as entrepreneurs and go-getters, we are fortunate to always find opportunities regardless of the circumstances we are faced with.

Let's reflect on the impact of Covid.

Entrepreneurs quickly adapted. In my case, when my visitor attractions were closed down due to government orders, I didn't fret. Instead, I opened a farm shop and acquired an ice cream company that could operate within Covid restrictions. "I'll have a flake with that, please!"

I bought a 100-year-old Essex ice cream company in 2021.

That's the essence of an entrepreneur - being chameleons and masters of change. I digress - back to these boring elections.

People believe that someone else will come to their rescue, that there’s a dawn of new hope and change, that everyone’s going to have more money, feel happier and Netflix will be free!

Dreamers will wake up. I learned, as a young and ambitious individual, that no government can solve your problems. I quickly grasped the concept that “if it's to be, it's up to me”.

Entrepreneurs possess the superpower of observing human behaviour and understanding psychology.

Here's the fascinating part - sometimes we don't even realise we have this superpower, it's just how we naturally operate day to day.

Successful, responsible, and driven individuals are the ones who get things done, often surpassing what most people can accomplish.

It's the hunger and mindset to achieve that sets us apart. It's quite magical, like possessing a skill that we use effortlessly without even realising it.

Imagine being Usain Bolt without knowing you're Usain Bolt. I hope you get the gist!

Entrepreneurs have the incredible power of reading people, but they might not even know they possess it.

Friday's election results will bring jubilation for some and disappointment for others. Many will be concerned about change, and some may anticipate receiving more or less.

However, based on my 40 years of life experience, I can confidently say that not much will change unless you want it to. You are in charge of your own future.

Of course, governments can make things a bit more challenging or less challenging.

Taxes may change and economic circumstances may fluctuate but, overall, we have it pretty good - unless we are at war or facing extremism.

The UK is a great place to live, compared to the real horrors around the world.

Remember, you are your own economy. If you desire more and want to accomplish more, you have the power to make it happen.

And here's an absolute fact of life: if you don't like where you are, move. You are not a tree.

Until next week, to your continued success,
